Who Knows What Is Enlightenment?

Posted on Oct 15th, 2007 by atma : Atma atma
Discourse by SWAMI SAI PREMANANDA

Enlightenment is the answer to humanity’s current suffering. My deepest desire is for each of you to become consumed in the yearning for enlightenment and base each thought and action in reaching this goal. Enlightenment provides a feeling of wholeness independent of all else. Currently, you all need your family—your parents, spouse or children—to feel whole; your friends contribute to your personal satisfaction. To become enlightened means to feel utterly and independently whole: Then, you walk fearlessly. Everything belongs to you, and you belong to everyone and everything. The world is your home. You feel completely connected to the source and realize your perfection. This is enlightenment.

Enlightenment is always acting in perfect, selfless love. The enlightened being’s every action is for the highest good, not out of selfishness or the need for praise. Every action is aligned with goodness and perfection simply for the satisfaction that leading such a lifestyle gives.

Enlightenment means living with the highest integrity and morality not because of any codes or other’s expectations, but because of the natural joy that such an existence provides. When I speak the truth, it gives me such joy; when I act with love, it gives me such happiness. The enlightened one lives a life of the highest integrity and morality simply because this is the natural state of being. To be selfless is your natural state of being. To be loving is your natural state of being. To be compassionate is your natural state of being. Come to your natural state of being.

Enlightenment is not possible unless you practice a life of high moral integrity. Some seekers believe that some transcendental experience will occur which will radically transform them, but this is not true. I have met so many who have had a very high experience of consciousness, but who return to their old ways after a few months; they fail to maintain their awareness because they do not practice the values necessary to support it. This is like ice-skating with tennis shoes: It is simply a mess. To glide beautifully along the ice, you need to wear the skates of morality and integrity which will allow you to firmly grip the ice.

Very, very rarely, a soul can have such a profound spiritual experience that it carries them to enlightenment like a raging river. However, this is extremely unusual. Most seekers must prepare the mind and body to receive universal consciousness by hallowing it with right thoughts and actions. Only in this fertile ground of integrity can enlightenment bear fruit. The current conceived definition of enlightenment must change from some mystic, unprovoked experience to one founded on a life of truth and integrity.

Many teachers claim to be enlightened but fall prey to vices and end up in prison for scandals or frauds. We hear of this all the time. These swamijis experienced a glimpse of the truth but chose not to live the life of integrity necessary to support their temporary awareness. If you cannot understand that enlightenment requires a life of integrity, then you will fall even if you achieve any kind of mystical experience.

Some believe that there are levels of enlightenment. This is rubbish: Only levels of un-enlightenment exist. Enlightenment is the “great check-mate,” the complete merger. The enlightened being lives completely detached from the mind, in the present, and according to the highest morality. Anything less is not enlightenment.

The enlightened Master lives completely in the present. He does not even associate with what may have happened the day before. He lives second to second, disconnected from all else and completely immersed in the moment.

Enlightenment requires much work, but the reward is so monumental: happiness like you have never experienced. Enlightenment is truly worth the ultimate sacrifice: surrendering everything that you are and thought you were. So many comment, “Swamiji, you change so often; each month, you are different.” What allows for this constant evolution? The fact that I do not cling to the past allows universal consciousness to stream through me and guide me fully. When the mind is not rooted in the past, the soul can evolve unfettered. Thus, Swamiji has changed so much in these past two years; each step has made me a stronger and sharper being.

I do not cling to any concepts of myself: I do not even consider myself as a "swamiji". I do not want to hamper my growth by feeling that I have reached some end. I always want to strive for better and higher feelings of love and peace.

I could have never imagined that the human body could experience such bliss. Who knows how much more bliss, joy, and freedom can be experienced? You must always strive for more: “Is this good? But can I do better?” With this kind of inquiry, perfect character is soon achieved. And with perfect character, true enlightenment naturally follows
